요약 : Following an introduction, in five chapters I present new scholarship on Rev. Thomas Knapper, the founder of Pleasant Green Baptist Church, analyze the growing class and education levels of the pastors, the financial and economic proficiency of the pastors, the establishment of auxiliaries and cadres, leadership development and the inclusion of females in leadership of the church. Importantly, I demonstrate that as Pleasant Green Baptist Church built wealth and grew in prominence, they practiced social interventions and racial uplift, and fought along side citizens and Civil Rights groups to challenge and smudged the color line in segregated housing in St. Louis, Missouri.

요약 : In addition, I examine the actions of several prominent African American clergymen in St. Louis from the perspective of intellectual categorization established by Antonio Gramsci and Edward Said. Finding their theories inadequate because of race and religion, I develop a new intellectual classification unique to and appropriate for Black Pastors. I then evaluate a unique collage of photographs that comprise a tribute to the sons and daughters of Pleasant Green Baptist Church that served in the United States Uniformed Services during World War II. I use the collage as a backdrop to unmask how the dominant culture uses images, science, and law to degrade Blacks and influence beliefs about African Americans. Most importantly, I demonstrate that Black religious photography contained in Pleasant Green Baptist Church's history in pictures is, in reality, a counter-hegemonic socio-political work contained within religious history.

요약 : My dissertation examines, contextualizes, and expands the history of Pleasant Green Baptist Church in St. Louis, Missouri, an African American congregation, from 1866 until 1945. I analyze their written history as a cultural document that contains the actions, accomplishments, and experiences of the pastors, lay people, and the congregation. I then apply the theory that Black Christian experience is the foundation for religious practice to extract the values and beliefs of the church. I use an interdisciplinary approach grounded in the historical method and archival research, combined with comparative analysis, quantitative analysis, and visual culture readings to interrogate the sources and to surface new scholarship.
