요약 : The body of the dissertation comprises five chapters. The first chapter deals with the introductory aspects of the study. The second chapter examines the various arguments employed by critical scholars in support of the inherent and independent power of spoken words. The third chapter deals with the various texts of ancient Near Eastern cultures (namely, Babylonian, Egyptian, and Ugaritic), which scholars insist demonstrate that the Old Testament shares or is a witness to the belief in the inherent efficacy of spoken words. The fourth chapter examines the efficacy of human utterance in selected passages in the Old Testament namely, Genesis 27; Numbers 22--24; 2 Samuel 16:5-14; 2 Kings 18--19. The fifth chapter is the conclusion of the entire study.

요약 : The thesis of this dissertation is that the Scripture writers did not understand human utterances as presented in the Old Testament as having inherent power in themselves, or fulfilling automatically. Instead they see the efficacy of human speeches to be dependent on whether they fit into the comprehensive program of God as revealed in the Scripture.

요약 : This dissertation attempts to demonstrate that despite the magical outlook of the ancient Near Eastern environment, the Scripture writers did not betray any magical thinking. The tradition preserved in the text at no place betrays magical thinking as normative. The Babylonian people were magical in belief and practice. The Egyptian people were magical and believed in the inherent efficacy of certain words. This belief in the inherent power of the spoken word has been attested also in Ugarit (i.e., in Canaan) as well. However, the Scripture writers did see ancient Israel as being influenced by popular belief in magic. Many passages in the Old Testament betray a magical outlook (e.g., 1 Sam 16:14; 18:10; 19:9; Psa 91). The Israelites (including Judah) were involved in these magical beliefs and practices, as were their neighbors. Yet these Scripture writers acknowledge that no part of human speech in the Old Testament has self-filling power or act independent of Yahweh.
