■520    ▼aThis  study  examines  the  use  of  Augustine  of  Hippo's    De  Doctrina  Christiana  in  the  Carolingian  world.  Rather  than  focusing  on  theoretical  aspects  of  Augustine's  work,  Carolingian  readers  and  appropriators  tended  to  focus  on  ideas  of  morality  and  love.  Especially  significant  for  Carolingian  thinkers  was  how  ideas  of  loving  one's  neighbor  could  help  one  approach  God.  Topics  include  the  manuscript  evidence  for    De  Doctrina  Christiana  and  its  use  in  Carolingian  image  controversies,  exegesis,  and  education.  This  study  seeks  to  understand  how  the  Carolingians  made  made  one  significant  element  of  the  Augustinian  tradition  their  own.
