초록/해제
요약 : This dissertation analyzes the rhetoric and practices of John Wesley and James Cone in relation to their perspectives on justice. By justice, I do not mean "forensic justice," which is based on a legalistic understanding or remedy regarding justice. Rather, I am using Wesley's idea of holiness that hinges on wholeness as my understanding of justice. Shifting from a forensic notion of justice to Wesley's idea of holiness frames the conversation in terms of wholeness based upon the recovery of the imago dei (image of God) rather than retributive or distributive justice. For Wesley, the recovery of the image of God is threefold: (1) natural, (2) moral, and (3) political. The recovery of the tripartite image of God requires certain uses of rhetoric and practices in creating wholeness between individuals/community.
초록/해제
요약 : Wesley focuses primarily on the recovery of the natural and moral images of God in his theology. His perspective of justice is influenced by his reliance on the recovery of the moral image. Cone, however, focuses on the recovery of the political image of God, and his perspective of justice is influenced by his political theology. I argue it is the dynamic tension between Wesley (the recovery of the moral image) and Cone (the recovery of the political image) that creates a different vision of justice grounded in Wesley's category of holiness. The rhetoric and practices suggested by Wesley and Cone not only are a vital part of the process necessary for the recovery of the imago dei, but also are necessary in creating a different vision of social justice. Ultimately, for both Wesley and Cone, it is the recovery of the imago dei (both receiving and intending) that humanity begins to seek a wholisitic vision of justice.
