■520    ▼aMost  of  the  major  religious  denominations  carry  on  extensive  adult  education  programs.  Materials  are  published  and  programs  are  planned  so  that  most  congregations  may  have  ongoing  programs.  The  assumption  is  that  adults  need  to  be  as  actively  involved  in  the  educational  program  of  the  denomination  as  children  and  young  people  are.  In  some  denominations  a  high  degree  of  activity  is  achieved.  In  others,  only  a  token  number  of  adults  continue  to  study  on  a  regular  basis.  There  are  millions  of  adults  who  can  be  identified  as  participants  in  adult  learning  activities  (Smith,  1970),  and  there  are  millions  who  can  be  identified  as  nonparticipants  (McKenzie  and  Shipp,  1981).
■520    ▼aThis  study  will  investigate  reasons  for  nonparticipation  in  adult  Christian  education  in  United  Methodist  churches  in  the  Western  District  of  Vietnam.  The  study  will  not  investigate  involvement  in  formal  religious  education  classes  taken  in  schools,  colleges,  or  theological  schools,  but  on  voluntary,  non-credit  gatherings  such  as  Sunday  school  classes,  Bible  study  groups,  reading  groups,  or  individual  study.  While  the  term  religious  education  will  be  generally  used,  this  study  will  be  done  in  the  context  of  the  Christian  faith.
