■520    ▼aAlthough  E-N  and  H  clearly  endorse  the  cultic  hierarchy  with  the  Aaronides  at  the  top,  the  roles  of  the  Levites  in  E-N  and  in  H  imply  that  both  E-N  and  H  are  more  closely  associated  with  the  Levites  than  with  the  Aaronides.  This  suggests  that  E-N  and  H  were  finalized  by  a  Levitical  group,  and  it  accords  the  Levites  a  more  elevated  status  than  generally  thought.
■520    ▼aH  also  presents  a  high-priestly  figure,  namely  Phinehas.  It  is  likely  that  Phinehas  passages  are  the  work  of  H  since  their  concerns  correspond  to  the  concerns  of  H:  the  Sabbath,  intermarriage,  and  temple  revenue.  Although  Phinehas  is  a  high  priest,  the  H  texts  on  Phinehas  link  him  to  Levitical  groups  in  the  Persian  period.  This  is  similar  to  the  portrayal  of  Ezra  by  E-N,  a  high-priestly  scribe  closer  to  the  Levites  than  to  the  priests.

■520    ▼aThe  most  important  studies  of  the  stratification  of  the  Holiness  Code  (HC)  are  by  Knohl  and  Milgrom,  who  argue  that  the  present  form  of  HC  was  shaped  in  the  eighth  century  BCE,  prior  to  the  composition  of  D.  This  position  is  questioned  when  E-N  and  HC  are  compared.  Analysis  shows  that  the  Pentateuchal  allusions  in  E-N  have  a  characteristic  feature.  Those  that  appear  to  derive  from  the  later  part  of  HC  (Lev  23-26)  usually  deviate  in  some  way  from  this  source.  In  contrast,  those  that  derive  from  other  legal  parts  of  the  Pentateuch  follow  their  source  more  or  less  accurately.  The  more  elaborate  treatment  of  shared  terms  and  ideologies  in  H,  the  later  stratum  of  HC,  suggests  that  H  is  later  than  E-N.
