■520    ▼aThis  dissertation  argues  that  nineteenth  century  pastor  Octavius  Winslow  effectively  demonstrated  the  practice  of  applying  doctrine  to  life  through  his  experimental  preaching.  The  introduction  defines  the  term  experimental  and  explains  the  rationale  for  a  dissertation  on  Winslow.  Chapter  one  provides  a  short  biography  of  Winslow's  life  and  ministry  with  a  look  at  each  of  his  five  pastorates.  Chapter  two  argues  that  his  theology  of  preaching  provided  the  foundation  for  his  preaching  methodology.
■520    ▼aWinslow's  experimental  preaching  was  established  on  two  foundational  elements.  It  was  grounded  in  doctrine  and  centered  in  Christ.  Chapter  three  addresses  Winslow's  doctrinal  preaching,  while  chapter  four  examines  his  Christ-centered  preaching.  Chapter  five  takes  up  his  experimental  approach  in  theory  and  practice.  It  reveals  that  Winslow  aimed  at  holistic  change  and  addressed  the  heart  through  the  use  of  six  other  elements.  They  include:  application,  discrimination,  interrogation,  illustration,  exhortation,  and  persuasion.  Finally,  chapter  six  offers  some  humble  proposals  for  the  significance  of  Winslow's  homiletic  for  today's  church.  The  conclusion  provides  a  summary  of  the  work  and  suggests  areas  for  continued  research.
