■520    ▼aAlthough  each  participants'  loss  experience  was  unique,  their  ability  to  voice  their  thoughts  about  this  time  were  noted  freely  and  provided  valuable  information  as  it  related  to  this  particular  study.  It  was  and  is  hoped  that  the  information  acquired  will  be  a  valuable  tool  for  the  church  as  it  seeks  to  minister  to  the  children  who  are  grieving  from  a  significant  loss.
■520    ▼aDeath  is  an  abrupt  end  to  the  personal  interactions  between  individuals  who  know  each  other.  The  church  has  recognized  the  necessity  of  relationships  and  the  grief  which  occurs  upon  the  permanent  severing  of  such  ties.  A  specific  focus  on  childhood  grief  and  the  church's  response  was  essential  for  not  only  individual  members,  but  the  congregation  as  a  whole.  This  study  was  designed  to  identify  practical  methods  of  ministering  to  grieving  children  which  may  already  be  in  practice  or  may  need  to  be  incorporated  into  present  Christian  communities  as  a  whole.
■520    ▼aThe  goal  of  this  qualitative  phenomenological  study  was  to  understand  how  previous  childhood  grievers  view  the  church's  effectiveness  in  ministry  following  their  loss  as  well  as  to  identify  areas  of  assistance  which  may  be  lacking  in  their  helpfulness.  This  investigation  was  based  on  semi-structured  interviews  which  were  reflective  in  nature  focusing  on  the  grief  of  children  between  the  ages  of  6  to  12  who  had  lost  a  close  familial  or  relational  figure  to  death  and  were  currently  college  age  adults  between  the  ages  of  18  to  22;  none  of  the  participants  were  minors  or  a  part  of  a  vulnerable  population.  The  interview  sessions  were  analyzed  and  then  compared  in  order  to  identify  reoccurring  themes  which  were  used  to  summarize  the  participants'  grief  experience  as  it  related  to  the  church's  reaction.
■520    ▼aThis  study  afforded  the  participants  the  opportunity  to  note  their  reflections  individually  as  well  as  corporately  in  an  environment  which  allowed  freedom  of  expression  of  thought;  a  time  of  member  checking  occurred  at  the  conclusion  of  the  individual  sessions.  Freedom  to  withdraw  from  the  study  if  it  proved  to  be  emotionally  difficult  was  verbally  given  throughout  the  data  acquisition  sessions.
