■520    ▼aAs  many  as  80%  of  individuals  seeking  counseling  desire  the  process  to  include  matters  of  personal  faith.  Inclusion  of  faith  and  spirituality  into  the  counseling  process  is  a  challenge  for  the  professional  counselor.  The  present  study  explored  the  lived  experience  of  engaging  in  Christian  marriage  counseling.  The  current  study  attempted  to  answer  the  research  question  using  a  qualitative,  phenomenological,  case  study  design.  Twelve  participants  between  the  ages  of  29  and  61,  who  have  engaged  in  Christian  marriage  counseling,  were  utilized  in  the  study.  Semi-structured  interviews  were  conducted.  Transcriptions  of  the  interviews  were  analyzed  searching  for  common  themes.  Seven  common  themes  of  high  religiosity  coinciding  with  a  desire  for  faith-based  counseling,  counseling  including  exploration  of  personal  needs,  education  regarding  the  communication  process,  the  process  aided  in  spiritual  growth,  counseling  exceeded  initial  expectations,  challenges  regarding  gender  roles,  and  counselor  personality  qualities  were  discovered.  Unique  themes  included  qualities  of  determination,  forgiveness,  and  maturity  being  necessary  for  successful  counseling,  investing  time  and  effort  into  the  process,  desiring  to  pursue  counseling  sooner,  and  encouraging  others  to  pursue  premarital  counseling.  Implications  for  counseling  professionals  are  included  in  the  research.
