요약 : This dissertation is a historical study of the development of the Christian Zionist movement in England from 1800 to 1917 and in the United States from the 1870s to 1948. It is intended to help fill the gap of knowledge that now exists in the historical record regarding those Christians who have supported the Zionist cause in the past. It examines the role that Biblical eschatology and Biblical ethics have had in influencing Christians to support the Zionist cause. For evangelical premillennialists, the establishment of the state of Israel in 1948 was a fulfillment of Biblical prophecy. According to their theology, Israel still occupied a special place in God's timetable and in God's kingdom, and Israel had a God-ordained right to the land of Palestine. A major part of this dissertation is devoted to explaining this expression of Christian Zionism. Other Christians supported the Jews and modern Zionism, not because of Biblical prophecy, but primarily based on a sense of social justice and Christian humanitarianism that comes from an understanding of Biblical ethics. These ethical motivations included the idea that because the Jews had been persecuted and often brutally victimized by nominal Christians for many centuries, support for the Jews was a form of Christian atonement. These Christian Zionists wanted to build a healthy and respectful relationship with the Jewish people. They supported the establishment of the nation-state of Israel because that would give the Jews a refuge from further persecution in a Gentile state not their own. This dissertation also attempts to correct the lack of attention given to the religious influence in the formation of British and American foreign policy toward Palestine. For example, the religious faith of Presidents Woodrow Wilson and Harry Truman influenced them to overrule a Middle East policy based on political strategic American interests alone in favor of a policy that supported the Zionist cause because of what they believed was a Biblical mandate for Palestine. In 1948, the Jews reestablished the nation of Israel. This was accomplished in part, through the influence of the Christian faith upon Christian Zionists who had supported this goal for a long time.
