■520    ▼aThis  dissertation  is  a  practical  theological  study  of  the  relationship  between  preaching  and  pastoral  care.  Drawing  upon  the  work  of  the  pastoral  theologian  Seward  Hiltner,  and  the  rhetorician  Chaim  Perelman,  it  demonstrates  that  all  sermons  contain  a  pastoral  perspective,  either  of  guiding,  healing,  sustaining,  or  reconciling.  This  pastoral  perspective  can  be  discerned  in  the  actual  theological  content  of  the  sermon,  specifically  the  sermon's  anthropology  and  ecclesiology.  Through  a  theological  and  rhetorical  analysis  of  the  sermons  of  Fred  Craddock  and  Christine  Smith,  the  work  demonstrates  how  the  pastoral  perspective  of  a  sermon  can  be  elucidated.  The  dissertation  concludes  with  a  constructive  proposal  for  pastoral  preaching  and  a  brief  theology  of  ministry.
