■520    ▼aFor  my  purpose,  I  will  explore  and  reinterpret  the  content  of  Calvin's  treatises,  commentaries,  and  letters  that  did  not  fully  illuminate  by  previous  Calvin  studies.  This  dissertation  will  find  out  what  Calvin  thought  of  church  unity  rather  than  impose  our  own  point  of  view.  This  study  can  give  a  challenge  to  the  study  of  Reformation  history  and  especially  make  a  contribution  to  a  new  understanding  of  Calvin  as  an  "ecumenist."  A  new  portrait  of  Calvin  as  an  advocate  of  church  unity  would  shed  light  on  today's  ecumenical  movement  as  well  as  Calvin  study.
■520    ▼aIn  order  to  establish  a  new  portrait  of  Calvin  as  an  advocate  of  unity,  my  dissertation  will  illuminate  Calvin's  unitive  efforts  with  Lutherans,  Zwiglians,  and  Anglicans,  and  argue  that  Calvin's  life  is  an  effort  to  keep  the  unity  of  the  catholic  church  of  Christ  through  a  via  media.  Calvin's  theological  achievement  was  essentially  political  in  its  concern  to  balance  opposing  impulses.  At  the  same  time  this  dissertation  will  investigate  Calvin's  principles  of  church  unity  and  how  he  applied  these  principles  to  actual  circumstances.
■520    ▼aIs  this  portrait  of  Calvin  true?  Is  this  real  Calvin?  Recently  new  studies  on  Calvin---such  as  the  studies  of  William  Bouwsma  and  Robert  Kingdon---from  different  angles  are  beginning  to  appear.  My  dissertation  will  be  a  part  of  the  quest  for  a  new  image  of  Calvin,  and  in  particular,  I  will  examine  a  new  portrait  of  Calvin  as  an  advocate  of  church  unity.  My  argument  is  that  if  we  explore  Calvin  at  fairly  in  the  contexts---theological,  social,  and  political---of  the  sixteenth  century,  not  ours,  it  will  be  seen  that  he  was  predominantly  conciliatory  and  zealous  for  church  unity.
■520    ▼aJohn  Calvin,  an  advocate  of  church  unity!  How  could  he  be  an  advocate  of  unity  and  not  a  promoter  of  schism?  According  to  the  old  and  traditional  image  of  Calvin,  he  has  been  considered  as  the  rigid  dictator  of  Geneva,  the  uncompromising  protagonist  of  double  predestination,  the  unmerciful  executor  of  Servetus,  and  a  schismatic  of  one,  holy,  catholic  Church.
