요약 : Augustine often uses visual metaphors and concepts to explicate the self's relation to God, and I will work within this framework, developing an account of vision from Augustine's Platonist and Trinitarian commitments, to describe the mutable, relational nature of the self. From this framework I will examine how the fundamental identity of the self, which finds its fulfillment in the vision of God, is to be to the image of God, and more specifically to the image of the Trinity. Augustine equates the vision of God with wisdom, which I will argue involves a type of temporal movement to God in praise achieved through salvation in Christ. Thus, we will see that the self finds its true and full identity in a movement of praise, made possible through Christ, in which the self images the trinitarian God.

요약 : My examination of Augustine's anthropology begins from the argument that Augustine's doctrine of creatio ex nihilo is not only a cosmological principle but also an ontological claim about the mutable, relational nature of self-identity. This conception of self-identity finds its confirmation and grounding in the doctrine of the imago dei, which for Augustine is the source of the self's fundamental identity. To be to the image of God means: to have one's identity always in relation to God; and never to possess the source of one's self-identity (i.e., to be the image of God), which for Augustine implies a mutability and instability in one's identity.

요약 : This is a study of Augustine's anthropology within the context of his doctrines of creation, Trinity, and Christ. Specifically, my research focuses on how Augustine utilizes the doctrines of creatio ex nihilo and the imago dei in his understanding of the self. This focus entails the examination of attendant claims on temporality and the origin of the soul, but the two just mention doctrines are the loci of the study.
