요약 : The dissertation is divided into two parts. The first consists of a detailed exposition of Calvin's systematic theology of ecclesiological adiaphorism as it is presented in the definitive 1559 Latin edition of the Institutes. The second is an amplification of Calvin's theory based on examinations of his commentaries (biblical theology), his sources (historical theology), and six controversies in which he was involved between 1547 and 1559, a period of great instability for the fledgling Protestant cause throughout Europe (practical theology). Calvin emerges as a passionate and yet practical ecumenist.

요약 : The thesis of this dissertation is that John Calvin's approach to ecclesiological adiaphorism (the doctrine of adiaphora, or things indifferent, applied to the Christian church) was unique in the sixteenth century, and that subsequent scholarship has failed to identify and appreciate that uniqueness. Rather than just two divisions of church doctrine he identified three: the indifferent (those details of church liturgy and polity which Scripture neither commends nor condemns but leaves to the discretion of each local congregation), the essential (those constituent parts of the gospel, belief in which is ecumenically recognized to be necessary for salvation), and the important (those doctrines which are taught in Scripture and are thereby not indifferent but which are not absolutely necessary for salvation and are thereby not essential either). Failure to recognize this intermediate category of the important was a leading cause in the fragmentation of Protestantism (e.g., since Luther could not regard the Eucharist as a matter of indifference, he insisted that it was an essential matter and broke fellowship with Zwingli over it).

요약 : The well-known slogan, "In essentials, unity; in non-essentials, liberty; in all things, charity," captures the general sixteenth-century understanding of ecclesiological adiaphorism which provides the backdrop for this dissertation. "Essentials" were understood as those things either commanded or prohibited in Scripture and "non-essentials" as those things which were neither commanded nor prohibited in Scripture (and thus made "no difference," a-diaphora).
