초록/해제
요약 : The purpose of this dissertation is to explore John Calvin's relation to the Classical and Renaissance rhetorical tradition, and to offer a rhetorical reading of sections of his 1559 edition of the Institutes of the Christian Religion. The first part of this work is a summary of historical evidence pertaining to Calvin's background in Renaissance Humanism and in the sixteenth century field of legal studies. It includes an account of Calvin's "conversion" which highlights the way in which his theological and Humanist proclivities converge. In the second part, two very broad maps are constructed which outline the various ways which the rhetorical tradition continued to exert its influence upon his later theological writings. The first map outlines the different levels at which the conceptual world of rhetoric influenced the '59 edition of the Institutes: his view of the theological enterprise; his pragmatic assessment of traditional doctrines; his understanding of God as the Grand Orator; and his style and form of presentation. The second map uses Calvin's prefaces as a resource for outlining the various audiences he intended the Institutes to address and various purposes he had in addressing them. In the third part, these two maps are applied to the first three chapters of the Institutes, and a rhetorical analysis of Calvin's doctrinal formulations is undertaken. In the conclusion, the relevance of this dissertation to the discipline of contemporary systematic theology is discussed.
