초록/해제
요약 : Chapter five sets the proposal articulated in chapter four in conversation with scholars outside the field of homiletics.
초록/해제
요약 : Chapter four introduces a conversational understanding of preaching that presupposes a connectedness between the preacher and the congregation and that takes seriously both the constructed--and therefore biased--nature of language and the inaccessibility of absolute truth. Such preaching aims to foster the church's central conversations.
초록/해제
요약 : Chapter one identifies traditional preaching that has its roots in rhetoric and reflects this theory's descriptions of preaching's purpose, content, language, and form. The chapter then responds to this theory by identifying problems it raises for some preachers, congregations, and seminary students: the gap that separates the preacher and the congregation into discrete entities, the theory's normative power, the presumed bond between words and objective reality, the theory's rationalistic bent.
초록/해제
요약 : Chapter three, following the same format, discusses recent descriptions of preaching which coalesce loosely into a transformational understanding of preaching. The chapter then raises three concerns: the continuation of the gap, the tendency to focus on the power of language to change consciousness and to leave unexplored the limitations and biases built into language as a human construct, and the claim that sermons should transform the worshipers.
초록/해제
요약 : Chapter two describes a kerygmatic theory of preaching, which borrows from traditional theory and charts new ground primarily through its indebtedness to C. H. Dodd and Karl Barth. The chapter sets forth this second theory's understandings of preaching's purpose, content, language, sometimes intensification, of the gap between the preacher and the congregation; the unrealistic claim that every sermon should be an event; the focus on the individual worshiper; the claims to certainty regarding preaching's content; and the failure to discern the complexity of the task of translation.
초록/해제
요약 : This dissertation focuses on the double question, What are preachers doing when they preach and what is expected of congregations, by themselves and by preachers, during a sermon? The dissertation explores the dominant theories of preaching in the homiletical literature between 1958 to 1990, critiques them, and proposes an additional, non-hierarchical understanding of preaching.
