■520    ▼aBut  how  does  one  get  this  power?  This  thesis  proposes  that  this  necessary  power  in  preaching  can  be  developed  through  holiness,  which  in  turn  could  be  reached  through  practicing  the  spiritual  disciplines.  This  brings  us  into  the  realm  of  the  Spirit  so  that  we  really  live,  abide,  and  walk  by  the  Spirit,  so  that  the  specific  purpose  of  power  in  preaching  can  be  fulfilled.
■520    ▼aIt  is  my  desire  that  this  study  help  preachers  present  the  Gospel  with  a  power  they  gain  from  on  High,  through  their  holiness,  so  that  the  Word  of  God  may  go  forth  in  a  mighty  manner  to  accomplish  His  purposes.
■520    ▼aPreaching  is  a  vital  part  of  the  Ministry  of  Christ  being  not  merely  didactic  but  also  kerygmatic.  We  preach  not  only  the  words  of  Christ,  but  Christ  Himself,  as  prophets  and  mouthpieces  of  God.  Being  so,  we  need  to  be  immersed  in  Him  so  that  voice  of  God  is  truly  heard.  We  need  to  be  endowed  with  holy  power  that  takes  us  over  when  we  proclaim  God's  Word.  That  will  only  happen  when  the  preacher  is  a  person  of  God,  steeped  in  holiness.
■520    ▼aThe  first  section  is  a  theology  of  ministry,  incorporating  theologies  of  preaching,  power,  and  holiness.  Section  II  looks  at  the  power  inherent  in  the  Word  of  God,  and  the  role  of  the  Holy  Spirit  in  preaching.  The  connection  between  holiness  and  power  is  surveyed,  and  the  question  of  motivation  is  considered.  The  next  section  (IV),  the  heart  of  the  paper,  deals  with  the  spiritual  disciplines,  their  purpose,  efficacy  and  practice,  with  specific  relationship  to  preaching.  In  section  V  the  logic  of  the  whole  proposition  is  investigated,  seeing  why  holiness  increases  preaching  power.  This  is  followed  by  four  case  studies,  two  historical  and  two  contemporary,  one  in  each  context  from  the  Western  world  and  the  other  from  the  Orient.
