■520    ▼aIn  Part  Three,  I  examine  the  nature  of  union  with  Christ  in  the  soteriological  dimension  where  the  secret  operation  of  the  Holy  Spirit  binds  believers  to  Christ.  Calvin  brings  a  new  understanding  of  the  work  of  the  Holy  Spirit  and  its  nature  of  unio  cum  Christo  through  the  various  applications  of  redemption.  There  are  three  categories  of  the  Spirit's  role;  mode  of  procuring  the  grace  of  Christ,  the  benefits  we  derive,  and  the  effects  which  follow  from  union  with  Christ.

■520    ▼aThe  first  part  of  this  dissertation  underlines  B.  B.  Warfield's  contribution  to  Calvin's  theology.  However,  I  conclude  that  union  with  Christ  is  the  central  theme  of  Calvin's  theology.
■520    ▼aThe  focus  of  Part  Four  is  to  expose  the  ecclesiastical  dimension  of  unio  cum  Christo.  The  redemptive-historical  role  of  the  Spirit's  work  at  Pentecost  indicates  the  nature  of  our  corporate  union  with  Christ  as  one  body.  In  sixteenth-century  Europe  the  Roman  Catholics  and  the  Anabaptists  distorted  the  doctrines  of  salvation  and  the  church,  particularly  by  the  omission  of  the  doctrine  of  the  Holy  Spirit.  Arguing  against  them,  Calvin  stresses  union  with  Christ  by  the  binding  work  of  the  Holy  Spirit  so  that  Reformed  theology  would  be  able  to  set  forth  the  distinctive  soteriological  motif  and  to  present  the  blessings  of  redemption.
■520    ▼aThe  focus  of  this  study  is  to  unveil  the  centrality  of  the  operation  of  the  Holy  Spirit  in  union  with  Christ  as  Calvin's  penetrating  principle  for  the  understanding  of  the  application  of  Christ's  work.  In  this  dissertation  I  would  like  to  present  Calvin's  biblical  idea  on  how  the  Spirit  works  through  the  various  aspects  of  theology,  the  Trinity,  the  Church,  and  the  soteriology  under  the  overarching  principle  of  unio  cum  Christo.
