요약 : Calvin is therefore judged to have taught essentially the same doctrine as Beza, on the extent of the atonement. Such differences as there are, concern matters of terminology, precision, exhaustiveness, and consistency.

요약 : Direct textual evidence confirms this conclusion. There are many places where Calvin interprets texts so as to render impossible a universalistic understanding of the atonement. There are some places where Calvin states the doctrine of particular redemption, albeit somewhat obliquely. Calvin is, however, less precise than Beza on the issue, and occasionally even makes statements which could be construed as teaching a universal atonement. Such statements, examined in light of Calvin's system of theology, and in the immediate context, generally allow of alternative explanations.

요약 : In order to compare Beza's doctrine of the atonement with Calvin's, evidence both circumstantial and direct has been examined. The circumstantial evidence includes a brief review of the history of the doctrine of particular redemption, along with the situation during the time of Calvin and Beza. For Calvin to have differed from Beza on this matter, he would have had to stand outside the historical stream of "strict" Augustinianism, and outside the majority opinion of contemporaneous Reformers, siding with opponents of the Augustinian-Reformed position. He would have to do that, moreover, without drawing undue attention to the fact. He would have had to allow Beza to continue to promote the doctrine, without leaving behind any record of disapproval.
초록/해제
요약 : The dominant opinion today seems to be that Theodore Beza extended John Calvin's ideas beyond his intention. Many have regarded Beza as a transitional figure between Calvin and later Protestant scholasticism. Beza's doctrine of limited atonement, like that of predestination, is seen in that light as rationalistic and Aristotelian.
초록/해제
요약 : The other line of circumstantial evidence concerns a comparison of the systems of theology of the two Reformers. No substantive differences were found between these two systems. There is no a priori reason to expect that Beza would accept, and Calvin would reject, the doctrine of limited atonement. On the contrary, if Calvin was consistent with his own system of theology, he must have held to the doctrine.
