요약 : Schleiermacher's doctrine of election, properly understood in the context of his overall thought and theological method, suggests a way beyond such theological and philosophical impasses, as well as opening some fruitful options for modern Reformed theology. Within Schleiermacher's system, election (as a single decree with no final reprobation) gives a soteriological focus to the divine causality that is perceived by all who reflect upon the (universal) feeling of absolute dependence. This enables Schleiermacher's conceptuality of God to evolve from terms such as "government," "justice," and "mercy" to "good pleasure," "wisdom," and "love." His understanding restores election to its inclusive biblical trajectory, even as it grounds election outside of space and time in eschatology.

요약 : The Augustinian history of the doctrine of grace handed down a problematic legacy that came to a head in the theologies of Luther and Calvin. Their conceptions of the hiddenness of God bequeathed to Protestant Scholasticism the difficulty of explaining how God can will universal salvation yet not effect it, a development that stagnated amidst attempts to overcome the problem using outmoded scholastic Aristotelianism. Enlightenment philosophy betrays a parallel effort to come to grips with the causal necessitarianism of Spinoza and the problem of "radical evil" in the critical idealist philosophy of Kant.

요약 : The concepts of election and predestination, considered in their biblical contexts, am distinct, though related. The Deuteronomistic and Pauline writers use election pastorally to affirm God's faithfulness to his people amidst turmoil; predestination grounds election outside the exigencies of space and time. There is no biblical warrant for subordinating election to predestination. The trajectory is inclusive.

요약 : The place of Schleiermacher's theology in the Reformed tradition has been disputed since its first appearance. A case can be made for placing Schleiermacher in the company of Reformed theologians by considering his treatment of election---a classical Reformed doctrine---and comparing his explication with Scripture and the tradition, an accepted evaluative practice in Reformed theology.
