- 요약 : Edwards concludes that assurance, which is predicated upon scripture's self-attestation, p [electronic resource: e-book]rovides the source of certainty for the individual regarding the truth of Christianity; the Spirit's conviction alone offers justification of one's belief as true knowledge. In articulating this, Edwards counters deism, registers a polemic against non-Christian religions, and contributes to contemporary epistemological discussions, such as the postmodern critique of knowledge and the idea of proper epistemic function and warrant. The controlling motif of this study interprets Edwards as apologist, presenting his divergent roles of theologian, philosopher, and pastor as unified and complimentary. Thus, this study offers a paradigm for interpreting the entire Edwardsean corpus by locating his understanding of assurance, in conjunction with the other functions of the Spirit, at the center of his apologetic and epistemology.

- 요약 : This study elucidates the apologetics of Jonathan Edwards by focusing on particular doctrines related to the Holy Spirit, especially assurance. Edwards' view of assurance is the culmination of the Spirit's work of inspiration as the giving of scripture, and regeneration and illumination as the giving of the new sense in order to see scripture. The assurance consists in the internum testimonium Spiritus Sancti to the truth of the gospel and the fitness or harmony of the gospel, as revealed in scripture, with God's plan of redemption. The Spirit's testimony convinces one of the absolute certainty of scripture and is analogous to but distinct from the notion of scripture as self-authenticating. Scripture's self-attestation, derived from its divine origin, is an objective attribute of scripture that is unaffected by one's response, whereas the Spirit's internal witness is directed to the individual, who, through the noetic effects of sin, is prejudiced against the evidence of scripture's self-attestation. In articulating these ideas, Edwards follows in the Reformed and Puritan tradition. Additionally, Edwards, standing at the beginnings of the Enlightenment, engages his theological heritage and biblical interpretation with the philosophical discussions prompted by John Locke, the Cambridge Platonists, and others regarding the nature and certainty of knowledge and the limits or capacities of rationality.
