■520    ▼aThe  purpose  of  this  study  was  to  explore  the  perceptions  of  and  the  training  received  by  self-identified  Christian  counselors.  In  this  phenomenological  case  study  of  American  Association  of  Christian  Counselors  (AACC)  licensed  mental  health  practitioners,  an  investigation  of  the  training  received  and  its  perceived  effectiveness  by  practicing  Christian  counselors  is  described.  As  this  data  is  shared,  counselors  desiring  specialization  in  Christian  counseling  will  gain  insight  into  desired  training  experiences,  based  on  the  responses  of  the  AACC  members  who  participated  in  this  study.  Furthermore,  this  study  contributes  to  the  body  of  knowledge  on  best  practices  for  training  AACC  Christian  counselors  to  effectively  integrate  religious  and/or  spiritual  issues  into  counseling.
■520    ▼aFollowing  an  extensive  review  of  the  literature,  an  11-item  open-ended  survey  questionnaire  was  created  and  distributed  to  a  purposive  random  sample  of  AACC  members  licensed  to  practice  professional  counseling  in  their  respective  states.  Using  Moustakas'  (1994)  method  for  qualitative  data  analysis,  the  open-ended  responses  were  organized  and  prepared  for  analysis  and  reporting.  Trustworthiness  was  established  through  thick  descriptions,  member  checking,  and  a  debriefing  interview.
■520    ▼aThe  use  of  Moustakas'  (1994)  method  for  phenomenological  data  analysis  garnished  themes  and  essence  statements  that  described  the  training  experiences  and  perceptions  of  the  Christian  counselors  from  this  study.  Essence  statements  for  the  training  experiences  of  participating  Christian  counselors  were:  post-graduate  school  augmentation,  graduate  university  coursework,  clinical  supervision,  and  religious  rituals.  Essence  statements  for  the  perceptions  of  Christian  counseling  training  were:  Christian  worldview  effectiveness  and  desire  enhanced  Christian  counselor  training.  The  responses  of  the  participants  in  my  study  provided  support  for  the  avowal  that  the  specialty  of  Christian  counseling  is  providing  meaningful  training  experiences  but  practicing  Christian  counselors  also  desire  enhanced  Christian  counseling  training.  The  competencies  for  addressing  spiritual  and  religious  issues  in  counseling  developed  by  ASERVIC  (2009)  are  viable  standards  for  Christian  counseling  training  curriculum  and  evaluation.
