■520    ▼aThis  thesis  investigates  a  biblical  subject  that  was  rarely  represented  in  Christian  iconography  until  the  seventeenth  century,  when  it  was  specifically  painted  in  the  Netherlands.  The  subject  is  the  Baptism  of  the  Eunuch,  from  the  Acts  of  the  Apostles  (8:  26-39).
■520    ▼aThis  thesis  has  two  aspects.  First,  it  is  a  thorough  study  of  the  iconography  and  iconology  of  the  Baptism  of  the  Eunuch,  that  is,  the  pictorial  tradition  and  its  significance.  This  is  achieved  by  an  analysis  of  sixteenth  and  seventeenth-century  texts  and  images.  Second,  this  thesis  addresses  a  broader  issue  that  is  currently  questioned  in  art  historical  literature;  that  is,  the  relationship  between  biblical  paintings  and  religion  in  the  multi-confessional  setting  of  the  Northern  Netherlands  after  the  Reformation.  Using  inventories  to  determine  patterns  of  ownership  and  textual  sources  to  shed  light  on  the  interpretation  of  the  theme,  this  thesis  re-examines  the  current  hypothesis  that  paintings  of  the  Baptism  of  the  Eunuch  were  preferred  by  Calvinists,  and,  in  relation  to  this,  that  the  iconography  bore  a  distinct  confessional  signature.  In  short,  this  thesis  uses  the  Baptism  of  the  Eunuch  as  a  case  study  to  investigate  the  relationship  between  denomination  and  biblical  iconography  in  the  Dutch  Republic  between  1579  and  1750.
