요약 : The author attempts to answer, "Why do people listen to or use Contemporary Christian Music radio?" (CCM radio), one of the fastest growing radio station formats in this country. Five naturally related sub-questions pertaining to audience uses, demographics, listening patterns and perceptions of CCM radio broadcasting are also addressed. In the process, the author tests two new spiritual uses and gratifications categories (fellowship and witnessing/evangelism) that seem to reflect audience behavior and might be applied to other religious media uses and gratifications studies. Furthermore, the historical-critical analysis of CCM radio in Chapter Three challenges the long-standing notion that CCM radio was a natural outgrowth of Contemporary Christian Music. The Principal Components Factor Analysis identified three primary uses of CCM radio. The first factor, para-community, is a new use of religious radio specifically and religious, broadcasting in general not previously identified in the literature. Individual use statements loading on this factor suggest that individuals use CCM radio to vicariously fellowship with the larger Christian community. The second factor, lifestyle management, reveals that individuals use CCM radio as a way to manage time (i.e., bracket the day or pass time) and manage emotional and spiritual moods (e.g., to relieve the stresses and pressures of the day and to "stay focused on God"). The third factor, content reaction, indicates that audiences use CCM radio as a positive alternative to the programming found on secular radio. This finding extends earlier research by Abelman (1987, 1988, 1989), who reported a "reactionary" use among religious television audiences. The results further indicate that the audiences of CCM radio are similar to other religious broadcast audiences in regard to demographic characteristics and listening patterns with a few notable exceptions. Additionally, audiences in this study have more favorable perceptions of CCM radio broadcasting than previously reported of such audiences (e.g., Seward & Dodds, 1993). Overall, CCM radio broadcasting is primarily reaching a Caucasian audience to the exclusion of other minority groups. Regardless of format designation, commercial status, market size and geographic locale, the data indicate that the audience of CCM radio is more similar than previously imagined.
