요약 : The thesis of this dissertation is that an "option for the poor" is a legitimate and even orthodox interpretation of the Christian tradition with respect to Christian response to the poor. Without an "option for the poor," properly understood, one cannot be said to be a Christian.

요약 : In part one, I explain what has been said about the poor in the bible and the history of the tradition. In part two, I justify the term on the basis of grace and the Incarnation. In so doing, I hold three realities together: (1) the historical Jesus and the Christ of faith, (2) the poor and, (3) the present context of global capitalism in which the plight of the poor is worsening, and in which religion is understood ideologically as a private matter.
초록/해제
요약 : First, with respect to the historical Jesus: Jesus and his first followers were themselves poor. As the Church became more affluent, however, a shift occurred from the Church of the poor to the poor as objects of almsgiving on the part of the rich. Even though the poor were now objects of Christian charity, however, the assumption of the Church was that poverty was an evil to be eradicated. The explanation for almsgiving was redemption for sin and the identification of Jesus with the poor.

요약 : In part two, I show how this identification can be made on the basis of Rahner's theology of fundamental option, history and symbol. Rahner takes the categorical realm seriously. There is no dichotomy between the sacred and profane. God comes to us only through the human. We encounter the transcendental only in the categorical. The human is the condition of possibility for God's becoming Incarnate. God is most present where God is furthest from Godself. Hence, there is a fittingness in identifying the Incarnate Christ with the poor. An "option for the poor" is therefore a privileged way of encountering Christ. Social solidarity with the poor is intrinsic to Christianity.
