■520    ▼aThis  dissertation  examines  the  development  of  Orthodox  biblical  studies  in  nineteenth-  and  early  twentieth-century  Russia,  particularly  in  the  period  1856--1917.  This  development  was  influenced  by  two  major  factors:  (1)  the  emergence  of  modern  historical  biblical  criticism  in  Europe  in  the  late  eighteenth  and  early  nineteenth  centuries,  and  (2)  the  enduring  legacy  of  the  church's  Patristic  tradition  of  biblical  interpretation.  The  major  characters  in  this  development  were  the  professors  of  Holy  Scripture  at  the  elite  ecclesiastical  academies  of  the  Russian  Orthodox  Church,  who  sought  to  appropriate  what  they  considered  to  be  the  best  of  modern  biblical  criticism  without  compromising  the  church's  tradition  of  faith.  To  put  it  another  way,  they  sought  to  find  an  "Orthodox  Way"  for  biblical  studies  in  the  modern  world.
■520    ▼aThe  dissertation  consists  of  five  chapters.  Chapter  1  includes  a  survey  of  Christian  biblical  interpretation  to  the  middle  of  the  nineteenth  century  along  with  a  brief  history  of  the  Bible  in  Russia  before  1856.  It  also  introduces  the  Russian  Orthodox  church's  educational  system,  the  venue  for  the  development  of  Russian  biblical  studies.  Chapter  2  discusses  the  emergence  of  modern  biblical  studies  in  Russia  at  the  beginning  of  the  nineteenth  century,  their  subsequent  "paralysis"  during  the  reign  of  Nicholas  I,  and  their  re-emergence  in  the  late  1850s  and  early  1860s  under  the  influence  of  Russia's  relatively  sudden  exposure  to  Western  "negative"  biblical  criticism.
■520    ▼aChapters  3  to  5  examine  the  work  of  the  major  figures  in  Russian  biblical  studies  from  1865  to  1917.  These  chapters  show  how  Russian  biblical  scholars  gradually  incorporated  Western  tools  and  methods  of  biblical  criticism  into  their  work  while  at  the  same  time  rejecting  the  more  extreme  conclusions  of  that  criticism,  conclusions  which  seemed  to  challenge  the  fundamental  tenets  of  Orthodox  Christian  faith.  As  a  result  of  this  process,  Russian  biblical  scholars  achieved  a  certain  measure  of  independence  from  Western  scholarship  by  1917,  manifesting  at  least  the  beginnings  of  a  distinctly  Orthodox  approach  to  modern  biblical  studies.
