■520    ▼aBethlehem,  Pennsylvania  was  founded  in  1741  by  followers  of  the  German  count,  Nikolaus  Ludwig  von  Zinzendorf,  who  turned  his  back  on  the  polemical  and  doctrinal  Christianity  of  his  day  and  created  an  antirational  religion  that  stressed  personal  religious  experience  as  the  foundation  of  the  Christian  life.  Jesus  Christ,  in  particular  his  suffering  and  death,  was  the  focus  of  this  religion  of  the  heart.  A  key  feature  of  this  religion  was  Zinzendorf's  reinterpretation  of  additional  Christian  doctrines,  such  as  the  incarnation  and  the  Trinity.  He  emphasized  the  complete  humanity  of  Jesus,  including  human  sexuality,  and  he  proclaimed  that  the  Trinity  consisted  of  the  Father,  Son,  and  Mother.  In  hymns,  sermons,  and  discourses  Zinzendorf  used  graphic  and  evocative  language  to  mediate  the  existential  impact  of  Jesus'  suffering  and  death.  The  side  wound  of  Christ  became  the  most  potent  religious  symbol  for  Zinzendorf  and  his  followers.
■520    ▼aZinzendorf's  heart  religion  attracted  thousands  of  followers  who  responded  to  his  call  for  a  new  type  of  Christian  community  which  they  called  the  Brudergemeine.  The  community  of  Bethlehem  was  the  center  of  the  Brudergemeine's  activities  in  North  America,  and  during  its  first  twenty  years  it  was  an  interracial  religious  commune  dedicated  to  mission  activity.  Labor  and  property  were  shared  for  the  common  good.  Children  were  raised  communally,  and  husbands  and  wives  lived  apart  from  each  other  in  single-sex  dormitories.  The  backbone  of  the  community  was  the  choir  system  by  which  the  entire  community  was  divided  according  to  age,  gender,  and  marital  status  because  the  Brethren  believed  that  the  incarnation  of  Christ  blessed  all  aspects  of  life  in  Bethlehem.  Children  were  conceived  as  an  act  of  worship,  baptized  in  the  wounds  of  Christ,  and  raised  to  be  brides  of  Christ.  Most  important,  the  blood  and  wounds  theology  of  Zinzendorf  served  to  sublimate  sexual  and  aggressive  impulses  for  the  good  of  the  community.  This  dissertation  demonstrates  that  the  adoration  of  the  wounds  of  Christ  was  essential  to  the  success  of  the  Bethlehem  communal  system.
