■520    ▼aThis  project  was  designed  to  reach  churches  of  the  Presbyterian  denomination  with  the  materials  from  the  Classical  Spiritual  Tradition.  It  is  focused  on  the  topic  of  Spiritual  friendship  and  how  a  restoration  of  the  wisdom  and  art  of  this  aspect  of  the  tradition  might  transform  ministries  and  congregations.  We  begin  by  taking  a  close  look  at  both  present  day  and  ancient  literature  on  spiritual  friendship.  This  teaching  is  grounded  in  the  stream  of  the  classical  tradition  going  back  to  the  Greek  culture,  entering  Christianity  during  the  period  of  the  early  Church.  It  had  a  profound  affect  on  the  spiritual  formation  of  many  great  church  leaders,  and  an  impact  on  the  creation  and  direction  of  ministry  for  many  centuries,  up  until  the  Enlightenment.  It  is  the  thesis  of  this  dissertation  that  wisdom  from  the  tradition  is  essential  to  meet  the  needs  of  seeking  persons  in  our  culture  for  a  more  relational  experience  of  ministry.  Our  society  is  hungry  for  relationship  which  the  gospel  offers,  with  both  God  and  each  other,  but  church  unfortunately  has  conformed  to  society  in  its  individualism  and  careerism.  We  attempt  to  apply  these  insights  from  the  past  to  aspects  of  ministry  today,  especially  the  role  of  pastor,  the  interaction  of  male  and  female  colleagues  in  ministry,  and  the  ministries  of  evangelism  and  spiritual  formation.  A  consideration  is  then  undertaken  as  to  how  a  more  relational  ministry  informed  by  the  tradition  might  affect  two  churches  in  the  Presbyterian  denomination  and  the  denomination  itself,  becoming  an  effective  means  for  transformation.  We  will  show  how  a  project,  "Friends  for  the  Journey"  designed  to  make  these  materials  accessible  might  open  many  to  teaching  spiritual  friendship  and  also  others  aspects  of  Christian  spirituality  now  lost  to  modern  Church  and  society.
