■520    ▼aThe  thesis  of  the  dissertation  states  that  the  explicit  use  of  narrative  in  pastoral  counseling  facilitates  the  process  of  clients  making  meaning  out  of  illness  experience.  The  dissertation  provides  a  methodology  of  practice  for  a  story  based  model  of  pastoral  counseling.  In  this  approach,  the  plot  lines  and  symbolic  motifs  of  folktales  are  used  as  templates  for  client-constructed  stories.  Based  on  Vladmir  Propp's  structural  analysis  of  folktales  and  Brengt  Holbeck's  principles  of  interpretation,  the  storymaking  method  provides  a  therapeutically  tailored  story  line  which  parallels  significant  illness  themes.  The  story  line  forms  a  narrative  cognitive  structure  that  orders  chaotic  or  disruptive  experience.  Through  the  use  of  imaginative  exercises,  the  client  develops  imagery  for  the  story.  The  process  aids  the  formation  of  imagery  into  more  relevant  and  intelligible  containers  of  meaning.  Three  case  studies  of  people  who  have  confronted  life-threatening  illness  illustrate  the  use  and  effectiveness  of  the  storymaking  method.
■520    ▼aThe  dissertation  revises  Charles  Gerkin's  model  of  story-based  pastoral  counseling  by  emphasizing  the  transforming  reality  of  the  "already"  over  the  "not  yet"  aspects  of  the  human  pilgrimage.  By  replacing  psychoanalytic  theory  with  Kenneth  Gergen's  narrative  psychology  and  Robert  Kegan's  developmental  theory,  a  greater  congruence  between  the  implicit  assumptions  of  the  self  as  a  "living  human  document"  and  the  central  motif  of  human  pilgrimage  is  achieved.
