요약 : This study aims at the construction of a "practical theology" of Pentecostal discernment and decision making that is true to the experiential nature of Pentecostalism yet meets the criteria for a critical theology. Practical theology, as used here, involves critical reflection upon the practices of a community of faith and is not simply recommending "applications" of a theory or theology about the leading of the Spirit. This means also that the primary focus of this study is not the construction of a "systematic theology" of Spirit leading; this study is primarily a contribution to theological method rather than a doctrine of the Spirit.

요약 : Drawing upon David Tracy's methodology of "mutually critical correlation," Pentecostal discernment and decision making is analyzed from a variety of perspectives. Ethnographic descriptions from a local congregation make available a means to a Pentecostal explanation of these practices. This study illustrates that Pentecostals discern the Spirit's leading through a variety of means but rely particularly on a deeply "felt" sense of "rightness." Ego and object relations psychology provide a framework for understanding Pentecostal and decision making as "creative regression" which draws upon primal resources of psychic life and well being that may have constructive value throughout later life while also presenting opportunities for pathological regression. From the perspective of Paul Tillich's theology Pentecostal discernment and decision making is understood as having "revelatory" potential, that is, of being moments in which one experiences connection to the source or ground of being. Case studies highlight positive and negative aspects of Pentecostal discernment and decision making.

요약 : This study draws from all three of the above perspectives to formulate criteria for evaluating these practices and concludes by offering an ideal model for Pentecostal discernment and decision making.
