요약 : The period from 1557 to 1582 saw the production of three distinct kinds of English Bible, the Geneva Bible, the Bishops' Bible, and the Rheims New Testament--each with prefaces, notes, indexes, and the like to aid the reader in interpreting the sacred text. The dissertation examines these Bibles in their several editions as well as the controversial literature surrounding them to determine what they meant for the religious communities that produced them.
초록/해제
요약 : The first editions of the Geneva Bible reflect the Protestantism of a once-exiled community, willing to defy constituted authority because of obedience to God; but the Bishops' Bible presents Protestantism as the official religion of the Elizabethan establishment. After the death of Matthew Parker in 1575, the queen's printer, Christopher Barker, published the Geneva Bible in numerous editions that reflect varieties of Protestant belief and practice, including those of Puritan critics. The argument of the dissertation is that these editions helped to keep Puritans in the Church of England so that in the 1580's they rallied to its defense when it was attacked by recusant Catholics, especially in connection with the publication of the Rheims New Testament.
초록/해제
요약 : For its part, the Rheims New Testament was an important milestone in the development of English Catholicism because it overturned a long-held position against not only the necessity but even the desirability of a vernacular Bible. The dissertation shows that such opposition had roots in the late Middle Ages in the controversy over the Lollard Bible. Thomas More argued positively for a vernacular text although rejecting William Tyndale's work; but in the first years of Elizabeth's reign Thomas Stapleton rejected vernacular Bibles as contributing to heresy and schism and used the literary and philological tools of his day to criticize Protestant versions. Confronted by the success of the Protestant versions and by the reality of their situation as advocates of a persecuted faith, the Catholic exiles at Rheims used those same tools to prepare a Catholic New Testament as an instrument for sustaining their faith in England.
