■520    ▼aThe  purpose  of  this  dissertation  is  to  investigate  and  analyze  the  liberation  theologies  of  Jose  M(')iguez  Bonino  and  Ronald  J.  Sider.  M(')iguez  Bonino,  an  Argentine  Methodist,  is  a  leading  proponent  of  liberation  theology  in  Latin  America.  Sider,  a  North  American  nur-  tured  in  a  Brethren  in  Christ  church,  has  championed  Christian  concern  for  the  poor  and  oppressed.  Particular  emphasis  is  given  to  the  impact  of  each  theologian's  cultural  and  religious  heritage  in  the  formation  of  his  unique  theological  and  ethical  perspective.
■520    ▼aChapter  one  offers  an  introduction  to  Latin  American  liberation  theology.  A  definition  of  liberation  theology  is  provided,  along  with  a  sketch  of  the  theological  tenets  of  the  movement.  The  chapter  traces  the  evolution  of  this  new  theological  expression,  focusing  upon  influential  movements,  individuals,  and  events  which  have  contributed  to  its  formulation.
■520    ▼aThe  second  chapter  surveys  the  religious  and  cultural  influences  upon  the  life  and  thought  of  M(')iguez  Bonino  and  Sider.  An  effort  is  made  to  delineate  the  theological  options  available  to  them  within  their  own  cultures  and  to  discover  their  reasons  for  choosing  particular  options.
■520    ▼aAfter  an  examination  of  the  impact  of  Marxist  thought  upon  liberation  hermeneutics  and  the  hermeneutical  circle,  the  herme-  neutical  emphases  of  M(')iguez  Bonino  and  Sider  are  compared  in  chapter  three.  Special  attention  is  given  to  each  man's  view  of  biblical  authority  as  it  relates  to  ethical  decision  making.
■520    ▼aThe  theological  foci  of  the  two  theologians  are  examined  in  the  fourth  chapter.  Four  areas  of  theological  concern--historical  con-  text,  one's  concept  of  God,  the  problem  of  sin  and  salvation,  and  the  relationship  between  the  church  and  the  kingdom  of  God--are  analyzed.  M(')iguez  Bonino's  call  for  a  new  theological  expression  is  also  included  in  this  chapter.
■520    ▼aChapter  five  probes  the  ethical  strategies  of  M(')iguez  Bonino  and  Sider,  focusing  upon  each  theologian's  understanding  of  social  change.  Their  conflicting  views  concerning  the  use  of  violence  in  social  transformation  are  also  presented.
