요약 : The years 1858-1892 appeared to be a time of little or no biblical critical scholarship among North American biblical scholars, yet the same years represented an important and formative time for many other academic disciplines. This study attempts to identify and investigate representative biblical scholarship of the period in order to determine its character and significance.

요약 : After reviewing biblical studies in America prior to 1858, the study focused on the two major biblical projects conducted in North America between 1858 and 1892: the preparation of the English edition of Lange's Commentary and the revision of the English Bible. Together these projects employed 63 scholars, many of whom had been students of the first Americans to experiment with critical methods, the New England Critics. Providing the first English language commentary on the whole Bible, Lange's Commentary enjoyed a favorable reception and strong sales. It succeeded in introducing a limited degree of historical criticism to a wide audience in America. The Revised Version simultaneously raised questions about the accuracy of the Authorized Version. It received an unprecedented reception from an anxious public and set a new world record for book sales. The American public, however, did not adopt the Revised Version as the Bible of the people.
초록/해제
요약 : These projects and the criticism they exemplified strongly affected the lives of the scholars who participated in them. Inhibitions of a long-standing, non-critical heritage were pitted against the attractions of free, critical inquiry into the history of the Bible. Some of the scholars began to adopt the new criticism; some steadfastly rejected it. Yet the projects also gave identity and purpose to biblical scholars and led to the founding of the Society of Biblical Literature. The SBL provided a structure for scholarly exchange and interaction among biblical critics. It also provided an academic context for mediating the rising controversy over biblical criticism.
초록/해제
요약 : As historical criticism found advocates among American scholars, it had a profound effect on religion in America. This effect was manifested through theological movements, theological education, and the church and entailed the beginning of a controversy within American denominations over the fundamental issue of how the Christian tradition should accommodate the conclusions of scientific reason. . . .
