초록/해제: 요약 : A central feature of Jesus' intention at the Last Supper (LS) is to call his followers to find atonement through mimesis of his messianic martyrdom. The contention here is that the place of righteous suffering for others in the historical Jesus' understanding of the atoning value of his death has been given short shrift in the construction of atonement theories in systematic theology. The LS is the best place in the Gospels to go for such information. Jesus' intentions will be configured through a research program that sets in abductive relationship the core assertion that the God of Jesus, the martyr-messiah, is the all-determining reality; the auxiliary hypotheses concerning the historical dynamics of meal, martyrdom, and mimesis; and the relevant historical data concerning the event of the LS. At the LS, Jesus understood himself to be the messiah who would fulfill his vocation through his violent suffering, death, and subsequent resurrection. His willingness to lay down his life obediently for others was the fullest of expression and the true actualization of the kingdom he had been preaching and enacting symbolically through his fellowship meals. The kingdom was the "new covenant in my blood," and it was entered through mimetic participation in that self-transcendent suffering for others. Just as one takes a meal into himself, one takes the suffering death of Jesus for others into himself as a new "way of life.".
