요약 : The proper distinction between Law and Gospel has provided a theological paradigm for Lutheran preaching since the time of the Reformation. The purpose of this thesis project is to apply the Law and Gospel preaching paradigm to the cultural phenomenon of American individualism. The thesis of the project is that the preaching paradigm of Law and Gospel can respond effectively to the individualistic mindset of American Christians by enabling them to live as Christians within an individualistic culture.
초록/해제
요약 : The study of the cultural phenomenon of American individualism includes the seminal works of Robert Bellah and David Riesman. The research indicates three negative manifestations of American individualism: a distrust of institutions, a seeking after self-fulfillment, and a conformity to others in a quest for individualism.
초록/해제
요약 : The Confessional writings of the Lutheran Church are the basis of explanation for the Law and Gospel preaching paradigm. The writings of Martin Luther and Carl F. W. Walther supplement the confessional writings providing further explanation of the proper distinction between Law and Gospel.
초록/해제
요약 : The writings of Martin Luther and his doctrine of two kingdoms place the individual into a relationship with God and neighbor. The individual is a unique creation of God, forgiven in Jesus Christ, and servant of neighbor in this world. This view of Christian individuality stands in stark contrast to the negative manifestations of American individualism. Four sermons serve as examples of the Law and Gospel paradigm applied to American individualism.
초록/해제
요약 : Hearers provide feedback after each preaching event. The hearers indicate that they heard the Law and understood the negative aspects of American individualism. These hearers indicate they heard the Gospel and recognized the plan of God in creating each of them as individuals to serve others.
초록/해제
요약 : The conclusion of the thesis project is that the Law and Gospel preaching paradigm can effectively speak to the cultural phenomenon of American individualism.
