■520    ▼aThe  primary  purpose  of  this  dissertation  is  to  explore  the  homiletic  methods  of  Fred  Craddock,  Eugene  Lowry,  and  David  Buttrick.  Constituent  objectives  include,  describing  each  homiletician's  theology  of  preaching,  illustrating  each  scholar's  approach  with  sample  sermons,  implementing  and  evaluating  each  practioner's  sermonic  method,  and  finally,  comparing  and  contrasting  their  respective  strategies.
■520    ▼aIn  chapter  one,  the  contemporary  homiletical  horizon  is  briefly  mapped,  Three  new  sermonic  forms  are  identified:  first,  an  inductive  approach;  second,  a  narrative  or  story  form  strategy;  and  third,  a  method  based  on  the  intention  and  movement  of  the  biblical  text.  The  names  of  Fred  Craddock,  Eugene  Lowry,  and  David  Buttrick  are  identified  with  each  of  these  new  approaches.  They  exemplify  the  new  options  in  homiletic  method  that  have  appeared  in  recent  decades.  Next,  three  factors  are  cited  as  accounting  for  the  emergence  of  these  new  sermonic  forms:  first,  the  perceived  pathology  of  the  discursive  method;  second,  the  rediscovery  of  the  dynamics  of  the  human  listening  process;  and  third,  the  recent  interest  in  preaching  that  is  biblical  in  both  content  and  form.
■520    ▼aChapter  two  treats  Fred  Craddock's  "problem-solving"  strategy,  chapter  three  studies  Eugene  Lowry's  "suspense-driven"  strategy,  and  chapter  four  considers  David  Buttrick's  "motion-picture"  strategy.  Each  chapter  explores  the  homiletician's  theology  of  preaching,  describes  his  homiletic  strategy,  and  then  implements  and  evaluates  his  sermonic  method.  In  addition,  a  homiletical  exegesis  of  each  homiletician's  sample  sermon  is  provided  as  well  as  a  critical  reflection  on  the  process  of  preparing  the  sermons  that  implement  each  of  the  three  strategies.
■520    ▼aChapter  five  compares  and  contrasts  the  three  homiletical  strategies  and  then  assesses  an  "old"  sermon  by  the  author  through  the  "new"  homiletical  eyes  acquired  as  a  result  of  this  study.
■520    ▼aThis  dissertation  establishes  that  the  three  homileticians  reject  the  older  discursive  method  of  preaching,  propose  listener-oriented  sermon  strategies,  and  provide  extensive  guidance  on  sermon  preparation.  They  differ  in  their  understanding  of  the  sermon's  definition,  form  and  goal.  Finally,  through  the  process  of  implementing  the  three  sermon  strategies  studied,  the  author  learned  firsthand  how  difficult  it  is  for  the  average  pastor  to  adapt  them.
