초록/해제
요약 : In this dissertation, I argue that emotions are of central importance to Thomas Aquinas's account of true human flourishing. First, I claim that any description of Aquinas's thought on emotions must include his accounts of both the passiones animae and the affections of the will. Second, I claim that emotions are indispensable as paradigmatic indicators of certain kinds of knowledge, particularly in second-personal contexts.
초록/해제
요약 : In Chapter 1, I describe several necessary characteristics of emotions as we understand them today. Next, I lay out the terms of the cognitivism vs. non-cognitivism debate. I conclude by presenting common normative questions asked about emotions regarding their relationships to rationality and morality.

요약 : In Chapter 2, I claim that the passiones are not the only emotion-like phenomena in Aquinas's psychology. First, I present Aquinas's metaphysical background of the passiones to show what kinds of phenomena these things are. Then, I offer reasons to doubt that passiones and emotions are simply equivalent. Finally, I analyze the metaphysical background of the affections of the will and claim that they too may be emotions.

요약 : In Chapter 3, I lay out the effects of virtuous habits on the passiones and affections. First, I consider the effects of acquired Aristotelian virtue; then, I consider Aquinas's higher perfections: the infused theological virtues and the Gifts of the Holy Spirit. I claim that, as one grows in virtue, the passiones will tend to be subdued, while the affections will tend to become more prevalent, all else being equal. The net effect of virtuous development is that one's emotions become more reliably responsive to the true good and, ultimately, to God. Finally, I assess the possibility for empathy in Aquinas's psychology, its place in his picture of moral development, and the emotions' roles in this.

요약 : In Chapter 4, I categorize Aquinas as a cognitivist and offer some replies to some non-cognitivist concerns. Then, I consider several roles for emotions in the life of virtue: first, as the paradigmatic indicators of knowledge of persons in second-personal (empathetic) contexts; second, as the paradigmatic manifestations of certain ethical intuitions, given the Gifts of the Holy Spirit.
