요약 : This dissertation seeks to argue that a rhetorical analysis of praise psalms will foster a clearer understanding of how praise functioned to shape the beliefs and piety of ancient Israel so that the reader will better appreciate the social, psychological, and theological contribution of the praise psalms to Israel's religious life.
초록/해제
요약 : The first chapter presents a selected history of research for the praise psalms from the eighteenth century to modern approaches. Careful attention is paid both to the questions asked and methods used in interpreting these psalms. This chapter demonstrates that despite the enormous gains of the last two hundred years, most interpreters have been concerned with questions either of the background (form criticism, cult-function, or historical approaches) or the foreground (reception history, canonical criticism) to the neglect of the poem as an interpretive unit, as some scholars have begun to note. This study attempts to bridge that gap by developing a rhetorical approach to the praise psalms.
초록/해제
요약 : In the second chapter, I develop a rhetorical approach to the praise psalms. Situating rhetorical criticism within the neo-Aristotelian tradition, I propose a rhetorical approach that would include: determining the rhetorical unit; describing the internal world of the psalm and its internal argument. This involves discerning the implied/textual author, audience, and rhetorical function of the text within the world of the psalm itself; determining the possible rhetorical situation(s) of the psalm; and analyzing the external argument of the psalm.
초록/해제
요약 : With this foundation in place, I systematically analyze four representative praise psalms (Pss. 19, 103, 46, and 116). The most salient results of this study are then collected and discussed in a concluding chapter. There it is argued that praise psalms function in a way analogous to epideictic rhetoric and thus played an important role in shaping ancient Israel's understanding of Yhwh and their own experience. Also, the function of the internal and external worlds of praise psalms is clarified. Additionally, it is proposed that a focus on the kairos of the praise psalms can clarify some of the debates concerning the setting of praise psalms.
