■520    ▼aDeveloping  sermon  application  is  challenging,  because  it  demands  preachers  to  bridge  the  immense  gap  between  the  ancient  text  and  the  modern  audience.  The  task  appears  even  more  challenging  when  preaching  Old  Testament  narratives,  because  this  genre  usually  does  not  offer  obvious  statements  from  which  preachers  can  formulate  application.  What  kind  of  lessons  should  be  drawn  from  biblical  narratives?  How  does  the  preacher  develop  hermeneutically  sound  and  contemporarily  relevant  applications  from  this  genre?
■520    ▼aGiven  that  many  preachers  lack  the  skills  needed  to  deal  with  the  challenges,  churches  today,  including  the  project  writer's  ministry  setting,  often  neglect  Old  Testament  narratives  in  their  weekly  preaching.  To  address  the  need  of  learning  from  Old  Testament  narratives,  this  project  sought  to  achieve  two  major  goals:  (1)  to  enhance  the  congregants'  competence  in  applying  Old  Testament  narratives  to  their  lives;  (2)  to  improve  the  quality  of  the  sermon  application  in  the  project  writer's  preaching.
■520    ▼aTo  achieve  these  goals  with  sound  theoretical  bases,  the  project  first  explored  the  purpose  and  nature  of  sermon  application  from  two  perspectives,  the  biblical  and  the  hermeneutical  perspective.  The  project  also  suggested  an  interpretive  proposal,  namely,  a  God-centered,  non-moralizing,  and  grace-driven  approach,  as  a  tool  for  developing  valid  application  from  Old  Testament  narratives.  Furthermore,  the  project  discussed  practical  issues  raised  by  the  homiletical  literature,  researching  skills  that  are  useful  when  developing  sermon  application.
■520    ▼aThe  project  implemented  the  proposed  theories  by  developing  and  delivering  a  sermon  series  on  Genesis  37--50  in  the  project  writer's  congregation.  A  focus  group  was  formed  to  help  the  project  writer  prepare  the  sermon  series  and  evaluate  the  learning  progress  of  the  audience.  Questionnaires  were  also  collected  to  evaluate  the  quality  of  the  sermon's  applications  suggested  by  the  project  writer.
■520    ▼aThe  results  showed  that  audience's  competence  in  applying  Old  Testament  narratives  improved  after  hearing  the  sermon  series.  The  questionnaire  results  revealed  that  the  quality  of  applications  suggested  by  the  project  writer  improved  over  the  course  of  the  sermon  series.  The  interpretive  proposal  was  tested  to  be  a  feasible  plan  for  developing  sermon  application  from  Old  Testament  narratives.
