■520    ▼aBy  2030,  out  of  a  projected  resident  population  of  five  million  in  Singapore,  an  estimated  nine  hundred  thousand  will  be  sixty-five  years  old  and  above.  The  average  life  span  of  a  resident  Singaporean  male  is  projected  to  be  eighty  years  old  but  his  last  eleven  years  of  life  may  be  troubled  by  poor  health  or  illness.  For  the  female,  her  life  span  is  projected  to  be  eighty-three  years  and  she  may  spend  her  last  fourteen  years  in  poor  health  or  in  illness.
■520    ▼aThis  project  seeks  to  learn  how  the  Psalms  can  contribute  to  the  spirituality  and  resilience  amongst  senior  Christians.  This  thesis  is  that  by  preaching  and  teaching  the  Psalms  during  a  sustained  six  months  period,  may  increase  the  spirituality  and  resilience  of  senior  Christians  in  preparing  and  facing  late  life  concerns  and  issues.
■520    ▼aChapter  One  outlines  the  process  of  developing  the  project.  Two  groups  of  senior  Christians,  from  Calvary  Baptist  Church  and  Pentecost  Methodist  Church,  were  invited  to  participate  in  the  project.  The  Psalms  chosen  were  Psalms  90,  91,  100,  103,  105  and  106.  Pre-test  and  post-test  forms  examined  the  participants'  thoughts  and  feelings  about  late-life  changes  and  losses,  perception  of  the  importance  of  support  from  family,  church  and  friendship  network,  and  the  importance  of  the  Psalms  as  a  resource  for  spirituality  and  resilience.
■520    ▼aChapter  Two  reviews  the  current  literature  on  resilience  and  spirituality.  What  do  we  know  about  the  connections  between  spirituality  and  resilience?  What  are  the  concerns  and  issues  in  senior  years'  spirituality  and  resilience?  These  are  the  themes  explored.  In  this  chapter  the  potential  contribution  of  the  Psalms  toward  seniors'  spirituality  and  resilience  is  suggested.  How  does  spirituality  help  senior  Christians  probe  the  deep  mysteries  and  conflicts  in  life?  The  prospects  and  promises  of  the  explorations  are  summed  up  with  a  model  covering  the  five  landmarks  of  journeying  toward  late  life:  Diminishment,  Contemplation,  Legacy,  Finitude  and  Completion.
■520    ▼aChapter  Three  explores  the  themes  of  preaching  the  Psalms  to  inspire  spirituality  and  resilience  in  senior  years.  First,  preaching  the  entire  Psalter  as  an  approach  of  letting  the  Psalter  tells  its  own  story  of  finding  refuge  in  God.  Second,  letting  each  of  the  five  books  of  the  Psalter  tells  its  own  story,  by  focusing  on  the  themes  of  faith  in  each  book.  Third,  three  great  preachers  of  the  Psalms,  their  time  and  context  of  their  preaching  are  examined.  The  three  chosen  preachers  are  St.  Augustine  of  Hippo,  John  Calvin  and  the  modern  preacher  Walter  Brueggemann.  This  will  give  a  chronological  snapshot  of  the  development  of  the  preaching  of  the  Psalms  through  the  centuries.  Fourth,  the  chosen  Psalms  are  outlined  and  summaries  of  the  sermons  end  Chapter  Three.
■520    ▼aThe  responses  of  the  participants  were  tabulated  and  presented  in  Chapter  Four.  Twenty-eight  participants  returned  the  pre-test  and  post-test  forms.  Generally,  their  responses  show  an  increased  awareness  of  end-of-life  concerns  and  issues.  They  also  appear  to  have  more  confidence  and  desire  to  use  the  Psalms  as  a  resource  for  devotion  and  prayers.  Some  interesting  observations  are  noted.  Sadness  is  a  key  feature  in  the  landscape  of  the  aging  process;  the  experience  of  growing  into  late-life  is  a  very  varied  and  diverse  phenomenon.  Every  senior  Christian  faces  end-of-life  issues  differently.  A  key  factor  towards  serenity  and  resilience  is  to  develop  and  maintain  a  network  of  friendships  in  the  community  and  in  church  life.
■520    ▼aThis  project  affirms  the  potential  of  the  Psalms  being  used  as  a  rich  resource  for  spirituality  and  resilience  in  senior  adult  years.  The  Psalms  should  be  good  companion  for  the  seniors  in  their  journey  of  faith.
