요약 : In response to the argument that specifically Christian beliefs are epistemically defective because lacking sufficient evidence, recent epistemologists have discussed whether specifically Christian beliefs are properly basic or rightly evidentially based. Richard Swinburne holds that Christian beliefs ought to be based on evidence. Alvin Plantinga holds that Christian beliefs are, or at least can be, properly basic. Although Swinburne and Plantinga hold incompatible views about the epistemic status of Christian beliefs, both claim to hold the view of Thomas Aquinas. An extensive survey of Aquinas's own texts shows that one set of texts seems to favor saying that for Aquinas specifically Christian beliefs are rightly evidentially based, and another set of texts seems to favor saying that for Aquinas specifically Christian beliefs are properly basic. Aquinas seems to be at odds with himself. Turning to Aquinas's interpreters, one finds them at odds with each other in ways similar to the disagreement between Swinburne and Plantinga. Some stress the evidential role of miracles and other signs in justifying the assent of faith. Others stress the how faith is a divinely infused light by which one holds Christian beliefs as first principles. The thesis is advanced that for Aquinas Christians hold what is corroborated by rational considerations of evidence otherwise than because of rational considerations of evidence. Christians hold what is confirmed by evidence, not because it is confirmed by evidence, but because of a unique psychological process of personal trust in God. Because Christians form their beliefs by this process of personal trust in God, such beliefs are properly and essentially basic. Rational considerations of evidence in favor of Christian beliefs do not produce those beliefs, but simply corroborate them in the face of skeptical questioning.
