■520    ▼aIn  the  third  century,  the  churches  of  both  the  East  and  the  West  played  a  major  role  in  resolving  the  tension  between  the  spirituality  and  authority  of  Christian  life.  In  various  ways,  each  group  attempted  to  find  its  identity.  There  were  many  factors  which  affected  their  identity,  such  as  the  persecutions  as  well  as  the  internal  struggling  with  different  sects  and  groups  within  the  Christian  communities  themselves.  Furthermore,  within  the  orthodox  Christian  churches,  there  was  a  tension  between  spirituality  and  authority.  More  precisely,  this  tension  demonstrates  the  different  ideas  and  understandings  of  the  Spirit  which  help  one  form  a  particular  type  of  Church.
■520    ▼aThese  two  early  Church  Fathers---Origen  and  Cyprian---contributed  greatly  to  the  formation  of  Christianity.  Origen  bequeathed  an  allegorical  interpretation  of  the  scriptures  and  Christian  philosophy  and  theology  to  later  generations.  Cyprian's  doctrine  of  the  Church  became  a  prototype  of  later  development  of  ecclesiology  in  the  West.
■520    ▼aIn  my  view,  however,  one  of  the  most  crucial  contributions  to  Origen  and  Cyprian  is  their  respective  ideas  of  the  Spirit  and  its  relation  to  the  Church.  This  relationship  issue  acts  like  an  umbrella  term  which  continues  to  involve  the  perennial  concerns  in  the  history  of  Christianity  even  in  today's  global  and  multicultural  contexts.  The  idea  of  the  Holy  Spirit  in  the  Church  demonstrates  four  issues:  1)  the  tension  between  spirituality  and  authority;  2)  the  identity  of  a  Christian  community;  3)  the  forms  of  the  Church;  and  4)  the  meaning  of  religious  leadership.
