요약 : This dissertation analyzes the Christology of F. D. E. Schleiermacher, particularly as it relates to his view of the dual nature of Christ. The study examines his response to the Christological propositions of the early church. It shows how his view of Christ was supported by his understanding of the immanence of God, the God-consciousness of man, and the concept of redemption.

요약 : The first two chapters introduce Schleiermacher's Christology and examine his criticism and suggested restructuring of the Chalcedonian statement regarding the two natures of Christ. Chalcedon provided a statement that solidified the orthodox position concerning the divinity and humanity of Christ for over one thousand years. The early church leaders chose terms that communicated who Christ was and who He was not. Schleiermacher challenged those ancient terms as useless for the modern era. He rejected a metaphysical description of Christ and dismissed the accepted characterizing of Jesus as God in human flesh.

요약 : Chapter three examines Schleiermacher's perspective regarding the immanence of God. God has a special relationship with the world as the divine creator who makes himself known to his creation. The Chalcedonian Creed defined Christ as God and man equally. He was the human revelation of God on earth. Schleiermacher's modern theory of the knowledge of God established a new basis for understanding God's revelation of Himself to mankind. He argued that one cannot define God or know Him as He is in Himself. Instead the timeless presence of God is immediately encountered in one's faith experience. God is communicated through the life and consciousness of the Redeemer as the divine mediator.

요약 : Chapter four examines Schleiermacher's understanding of God-consciousness, the linchpin of his theology. Through one's God-consciousness, the self perceives that it is absolutely dependent on the source of its existence. God's presence lies in the human self-consciousness. Christ awakens man to his dependence on God through his experience of the divine in the God-consciousness of Christ. Thus, Christ was able to mediate the existence of God to man because he bore within himself the perfect God-consciousness, not because he was a metaphysical combination of two natures.

요약 : Chapter five examines Schleiermacher's concept of redemption as the starting point of his theology. He believed redemption is the communication of the God-consciousness of Christ to man, putting the emphasis on the Savior's life rather than his death. His God-consciousness is communicated to mankind through the influence of His life and the influence of the believing community.

요약 : The work concludes with a final analysis of Schleiermacher's suggested restructuring of the language of Chalcedon. He respected the ancient creed and sought to honor the truth of God in Christ in modern terms. He defended the person and work of Christ, but his defense rested on a different foundation than the early church intended. Schleiermacher's understanding of God, man, and the need for redemption provided a foundation based on the experience of faith rather than Scripture or tradition.
