■520    ▼aThe  dissertation  studies  the  Synoptic  portrayal  of  Jesus  in  light  of  his  relationship  with  the  Jerusalem  temple.  Recently  the  "cleansing"  has  served  as  a  sounding  board  for  historians  to  contrast  their  image  of  him  with  what  is  known  of  Judaism.  This  action,  however,  was  just  one  incident  in  Jesus'  life  whereby  he  demonstrated  his  perception  of  messianism  and  the  temple.  By  interpreting  the  passages  which  refer  to  the  temple  or  use  temple  imagery,  the  interpreter  will  achieve  a  broader  framework  to  understand  Jesus  in  his  Jewish  milieu.  The  dissertation  explores  the  degree  of  continuity  between  temple  ideology,  Jesus'  messianism,  and  the  church's  interpretation  by  studying  temple  motifs  in  the  Synoptics.
■520    ▼aChapter  one  first  overviews  how  theologians  and  historians  have  interpreted  Jesus  in  accordance  with  his  actions  in  and  teachings  concerning  the  temple.  The  chapter's  second  half  surveys  OT  and  Jewish  texts  which  depict  the  temple's  role  in  society  and  theology  and  possible  criticisms  of  it.
■520    ▼aThe  second  chapter  analyzes  Jesus  as  the  Son  of  God  and  Son  of  man  in  light  of  temple  ideology.  Focusing  upon  the  times  prior  to  the  final  entrance  when  he  was  in  the  temple  and  the  words  he  said  concerning  it,  the  discussion  examines  how  Jesus  understood  messianism  in  light  of  the  sanctuary.  Several  texts  are  often  not  considered  as  pertinent  to  historical  studies,  but  the  inquiry  demonstrates  the  temple  motifs  inherent  to  their  interpretation.
■520    ▼aThe  final  chapter  examines  Jesus'  temple  ministry  and  its  role  in  the  trial.  It  first  looks  into  the  temple  action  with  regards  to  history  and  theology,  answering  questions  of  what  precipitated  the  action  and  Jesus'  intent.  The  second  aim  deals  with  the  disputations  and  teachings  in  the  temple  and  how  they  reveal  his  authority  to  act  and  the  judgment  he  pronounces.  Finally,  the  chapter  considers  the  Sanhedrin  trial  in  relation  to  the  temple  and  blasphemy  charges.  The  temple  charge  serves  as  a  springboard  to  understand  Jesus'  equation  of  the  new  temple  with  the  resurrection.  Jesus'  response  to  the  priest's  question  reveals  that  he  was  the  Son  of  man  enthroned  in  the  heavenly  temple.
