요약 : The classification of four parables in The Gospel of Luke--The Merciful Samaritan, The Foolish Rich Man, The Rich Man and Poor Lazarus, The Pharisee and the Toll Collector--as "example narratives" is subjected to scrutiny in this study. Adolf Julicher, though not the first scholar in the nineteenth century to assert that these four parables are a distinctive group of $\pi\alpha\rho\alpha\beta o \lambda\alpha\acute{\iota}$, proposed the definition of the category Beispielerzahlung (example narrative) that has assumed a pivotal place in the history of parable research. A sustained and detailed examination of Julicher's perspective on the example narratives and a variety of other perspectives on the example narratives advanced by scholars in this century indicates that the criteria invoked to distinguish the example narratives as a particular kind of $\pi\alpha\rho\alpha\beta o \lambda\acute{\eta}$ are problematic and that attempts to differentiate these four parables from all the other parables attributed to Jesus in the synoptic gospels have not been entirely successful. The categorical distinction between parable and example narrative as maintained by several modern parable scholars is increasingly suspect in light of the precepts on parable and example issued by several ancient rhetoricians. Although a particular feature exhibited by each of these four parables in The Gospel of Luke, a feature that involves the characters they depict, may contribute to the notion that the "example narratives" as a group differ from all the other parables recorded in the synoptic gospels, the difference is one of degree not kind. The claim that the example narrative is a unique kind of $\pi\alpha\rho\alpha\beta o \lambda\acute{\eta}$ is questioned; the thesis that these four parables are anomalous, or essentially different from all the other parables attributed to Jesus, is rejected. This study suggests that the categorical distinction between parable and "example narrative" does not withstand scrutiny, that the category "example narrative" is otiose, and that each one of the so-called "example narratives" is precisely what the third evangelist explicitly called two of them--a $\pi\alpha\rho\alpha\beta o \lambda\acute{\eta}$.
