- 요약 : Bernard Haring's, The Law of Christ, broke new ground in Catholic moral theology in the 1950s by redefining the categories within the neo-Thomist tradition according to biblical, personalist, and sacramental understandings of the moral life. Though Haring's accomplishments have been widely recognized, a significant aspect of his thought--the relationship between morality and worship--has gone unnoticed.

- 요약 : The concept of responsibility forms the center of Haring's sacramental-moral theology: both religion and morality constitute receiving and responding to divine initiative. The sacraments continue the divine-human dialogue, which extends from creation through the Incarnation and the Church. Sacraments are the primary context for divine-human encounter because they are dialogical (encounter with the divine), cultal (requiring external expression through signs, symbols, and gestures), and social (an act of the entire community). Haring incorporates this word-response motif with the Christology of the liturgical movement: Christ is the Word of God spoken to humanity, the perfect embodiment of humanity's response to God, and as High Priest, the supreme example of worship, adoration, and obedience. Likewise, human persons are created as word; through baptism they enter Christ's priesthood, becoming true worshippers of the Father and imitators of the Son.

- 요약 : While he retains the manualists' categories of the theological and moral virtues, Haring reinterprets them according to his word-response theology. In particular, he gives a minor concept--the virtue of religion--special prominence. As a moral virtue under-justice, religion was traditionally defined as rendering to God his due. Haring separates religion from justice and places it between the theological and moral virtues in order to emphasize the inter-relatedness of religion and morality. The virtue of religion is expressed and nurtured through the Church's sacraments and thereby sanctifies all moral and religious action. Religion consists of interior and exterior acts; this study compares Haring's treatment of the interior acts (devotion and prayer) and the exterior acts (adoration and the use of God's name) with that of Aquinas and the Catholic manualists.
