■520    ▼aIn  recent  decades  the  issue  of  Calvinism  has  received  renewed  attention  among  Evangelical  Christians,  particularly  Southern  Baptists.  An  assertion  often  made  by  non-Calvinists  is  that  Calvinism  and  evangelism  are  mutually  exclusive,  and  that  a  resurgence  of  Calvinism  will  stifle  evangelistic  enterprise.  The  First  Great  Awakening,  one  of  the  most  extraordinary  revivals  in  the  annals  of  church  history,  was  led  by  men  who  held  to  Calvinistic  theology.  The  basic  purpose  of  this  dissertation  is  to  provide  information  relevant  to  the  current  issue  regarding  Calvinism  and  evangelism.  It  does  this  through  an  examination  of  the  preaching  and  teaching  of  the  leading  figures  of  the  First  Great  Awakening.
■520    ▼aThis  dissertation  utilizes  the  printed  sermons  and  theological  works  of  the  leading  figures  of  the  First  Great  Awakening.  It  also  utilizes  historical  documents,  biographical  information,  and  scholarly  research  related  to  the  relevant  periods  discussed.
■520    ▼aThe  dissertation  begins  with  some  contemporary  statements  reflecting  a  negative  attitude  in  regard  to  the  effect  of  Calvinism  on  evangelism,  then  gives  an  historical  overview  of  the  Calvinist-Arminian  debate,  and  then  proceeds  to  examine  the  preaching  and  teaching  of  the  leading  figures  of  the  First  Great  Awakening.
■520    ▼aThis  dissertation  concludes  that  the  preaching  and  teaching  of  the  leaders  of  the  First  Great  Awakening  was  a  reflection  of  their  theological  convictions.  They  did  not  divorce  their  theology  from  their  evangelistic  endeavors.  Rather,  their  theology  was  part  and  parcel  of  their  evangelistic  endeavors.
