■520    ▼aPresbyterian  pastor,  preacher,  and  professor,  and  Southern  patriot  and  apologist,  Robert  Lewis  Dabney  (1820-1898)  published  several  articles  and  one  textbook  on  homiletics,  entitled  Lectures  on  Sacred  Rhetoric  .  He  also  published  a  few  of  his  most  famous  speeches  and  sermons.  In  addition,  Dabney  left  475  sermon  manuscripts  to  the  Union  Theological  Seminary  in  Richmond,  Virginia.  Among  the  many  subjects  he  addressed  in  his  textbook,  Dabney  emphasized  the  superiority  of  extemporaneous  sermon  delivery  over  the  other  two  current  delivery  methods,  which  were  reading  and  verbatim  recitation  of  a  full  manuscript.  This  dissertation  focuses  on  Dabney's  sermon  delivery  method  by  explaining  the  method,  tracing  those  who  influenced  Dabney's  views  on  delivery,  comparing  Dabney's  method  to  those  of  five  of  his  contemporaries,  recreating  Dabney's  own  practice,  and  considering  Dabney's  legacy  among  evangelical  preachers.
