■520    ▼aThe  Bourse  francaise  was  a  fund  for  poor  Protestant  refugees  to  Geneva  from  Roman  Catholic  France.  It  was  founded  in  the  mid-sixteenth  century  and  run  by  deacons  of  the  Reformed  Church  of  Geneva  until  the  mid-nineteenth  century  when  it  was  dissolved.  Jean  Calvin  was  instrumental  in  the  formation  of  the  fund  and  active  as  a  donor  and  participant.  His  ideas  about  the  Protestant  diaconate  and  the  responsibility  of  Christians  to  the  poor  inspired  the  formative  years  of  the  institution,  but  the  organization  was  run  with  the  money  and  effort  of  a  dedicated  group  of  zealous  immigrants  to  Geneva  who  gave  their  time  and  resources  to  the  Bourse  francaise  without  financial  compensation.  They  worked  as  deacons,  auditors,  collectors  of  contributions,  and  hosts  to  homeless  refugees.
■520    ▼aThe  Bourse  was  charged  with  helping  the  poor.  Those  who  were  assisted  by  the  fund  included  the  sick,  disabled,  orphaned,  aged,  and  widowed,  but  there  were  also  many  able-bodied  refugees  who  received  help.  The  deacons  encouraged  them  to  move  quickly  into  the  work  force  by  providing  them  with  tools,  vocational  training,  and  an  opportunity  to  work.  They  paid  apprenticeship  fees  and  supported  education  by  paying  school  fees  and  buying  Bibles  for  the  poor.  In  all  these  endeavors  they  exercised  economy,  making  loans  rather  than  direct  handouts  when  possible  and  buying  up  cloth  and  hardgoods  in  quantity.
■520    ▼aIn  the  late  1550s  and  early  1560s  the  Bourse  extended  its  functions  beyond  the  poor  by  buying  Bibles,  catechisms,  and  Psalters,  apparently  for  dissemination  in  France  through  Laurent  de  Normandie  and  the  corps  of  colporteurs  who  made  their  way  into  Roman  Catholic  areas  with  evangelical  books.  The  fund  thus  became  part  of  the  missionary  endeavor  emanating  from  Geneva.  It  gave  aid  to  ministers  and  their  families,  to  the  families  of  people  martyred  in  France,  and  to  innumerable  messengers  sent  forth  by  the  Company  of  Pastors  of  Geneva.  It  became,  in  effect,  a  financial  arm  of  that  body,  closely  tied  to  the  Church  and  willing  to  disseminate  funds  on  many  projects  that  were  not  strictly  connected  with  the  poor.
■520    ▼aAs  the  work  of  the  Bourse  francaise  expanded  beyond  Geneva,  its  financial  support  also  grew  to  include  people  living  abroad.  Money  was  sent  to  the  Bourse  from  Reformed  churches  and  from  Protestants  in  Roman  Catholic  areas,  particularly  from  France.  The  Bourse  became  an  integral  part  of  the  European  network  of  Reformed  churches,  acting  as  a  depository  of  money  and  a  facilitator  of  international  financial  arrangements.  Similar  funds  were  organized  in  new  areas  where  Reformed  congregations  organized  and  deacons  were  chosen.  The  mother  institution  in  Geneva  thus  served  as  a  model  wherever  Reformed  churches  were  established.
■520    ▼aThe  documents  that  made  possible  the  study  of  the  Bourse  francaise  during  the  era  of  Jean  Calvin  are  account  books  that  are  preserved  in  the  Archives  of  the  State  of  Geneva,  Switzerland.  The  earliest  deacon-accountant  of  the  Bourse  was  Jean  Bude,  son  of  the  French  humanist,  Guillaume  Bude.  The  wealthy  Bude  family  and  their  friends  in  the  community  of  French  immigrants  in  Geneva  provided  much  of  the  early  leadership  of  the  Bourse  francaise,  but  they  did  not  all  leave  literary  records.  The  nobles  and  businessmen  who  ran  the  Bourse  left  their  permanent  records  in  the  legal  and  notarial  registers  of  the  period  rather  than  on  the  printed  page.  Thus  their  story  and  that  of  the  Bourse  francaise  has  been  left  largely  uncovered  until  this  present  study.
