초록/해제
요약 : This dissertation presents the history of preaching in the Christian Reformed Church during the years 1935-1975, the years in which the denomination moved from its Dutch immigrant isolation toward assimilation into the American ecclesiastical mainstream. The resultant crisis facing the church's preaching becomes illustrative of general issues confronting conservative Calvinist (Reformed) preaching in America as well as illuminative of the process by which ethnic church practices are drawn into the American mainstream.
초록/해제
요약 : The story of preaching is told from a theological perspective, relying heavily on the type of historical/theological analysis pioneered by Yngve Brilioth and especially as developed by Conrad Massa. Further methodological development of this approach is included.
초록/해제
요약 : The study reveals that the aspect of Christian Reformed preaching most unique to North America was its continentally-rooted theological perspective on preaching which came to expression in terms of its principles for, concepts about, and actual practice of preaching. When this heavily "God-centered" understanding of the preaching act came under the pressure of assimilation to the increasingly "human-centered" American mainstream, a crisis of practice resulted.
초록/해제
요약 : Data utilized in telling the story of this developing crisis includes formal theological writings, informal discussions published in church periodicals, homiletical education of the era, ecclesiastical decisions regarding preaching, and published sermons. Certain especially representative figures are highlighted such as Samuel Volbeda, R. B. Kuiper, and Louis Berkhof, as well as Peter H. Eldersveld and Joel H. Nederhood of the Back to God Hour broadcast ministries. Also discussed are the theological implications of certain distinctive practices such as Heidelberg Catechism preaching.
초록/해제
요약 : The presentation is organized into three sections beginning with the Christian Reformed Church's "Age of Orthodoxy" (1935-1948) and continuing through its "Time of Transition" (1948-1973) to the "Era of Assimilation" (1973-1975). The study concludes with an assessment of the prospects for conservative Calvinist preaching in North America. Its continuation is seen to be dependent upon the further clarification of homiletical principle, the building of new theoretical concepts of preaching, and the establishment of flexible limits for actual practice.
